Srinivasa Reddy Kandi: Anthropic Executive Steps Down from Figma Board Amid Emerging AI Design Competition

Anthropic Executive Steps Down from Figma Board Amid Emerging AI Design Competition:

Mike Krieger, chief product officer at Anthropic, has resigned from the board of Figma as of April 14. The move was disclosed in a filing to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on the same day reports surfaced that Anthropic’s upcoming AI model, Opus 4.7, may introduce design capabilities that could rival Figma’s core offerings.

Figma is widely known for its collaborative tools used by designers to create user interfaces for websites and applications. The company has previously partnered with Anthropic to integrate its advanced AI models into Figma’s platform, enhancing productivity for users.

Krieger, who co-founded Instagram and later launched the AI-driven news app Artifact, joined Anthropic as its top product leader in 2024 and became a member of Figma’s board less than a year ago.

His departure highlights growing concerns among investors about the so-called “SaaSpocalypse”—the idea that leading AI companies could disrupt or overtake traditional software providers. This sentiment has already impacted markets, with major software-focused funds like iShares Expanded Tech-Software Sector ETF (IGV) seeing notable declines this year.

At the same time, Anthropic’s valuation continues to soar, with reports suggesting the company has declined investment offers at an $800 billion valuation—more than double its earlier valuation this year.

Despite these developments, questions remain about whether AI companies like Anthropic and OpenAI can fully replicate the deep expertise and customer relationships built by established software platforms. Notably, Figma’s stock rose 5% following news of Krieger’s resignation, though the market’s long-term reaction may depend on the release and capabilities of Anthropic’s next-generation model.
