A Beginner-Friendly Introduction to the Open-Source Twitter Alternative

If you don’t closely follow emerging social platforms, chances are you hadn’t heard of Mastodon until Elon Musk acquired Twitter and rebranded it as X. After the takeover, uncertainty about Twitter’s future pushed millions of users to explore alternatives. While some experimented with platforms like Bluesky or Instagram’s Threads, Mastodon stood out because it wasn’t new — it had already been around since 2016, quietly building a distinct identity rather than simply copying Twitter.

What Is Mastodon?

Mastodon was created in 2016 by German software developer Eugen Rochko. Unlike major social platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, or Reddit, Mastodon operates as a nonprofit organization. Its focus is on serving its community and the public interest, not on generating profits for shareholders.

At first glance, Mastodon may resemble Twitter, with short posts and familiar social features. However, behind the scenes, it works very differently. Mastodon is decentralized — not in a cryptocurrency or blockchain sense — but as a federated network, similar to how email works.

When you sign up, you choose a server, much like selecting Gmail or Yahoo for email. That server becomes part of your username. For example, joining through a climate-focused server might give you an address like @username@climatejustice.social. Even though you’re registered on one server, you can still interact with users on other servers across Mastodon, just as Gmail users can email people on Outlook or Yahoo.

That said, individual servers can block others if they don’t align with their values or moderation standards. If a server is blocked, its users won’t be able to communicate with those outside communities.
