AI’s Next Bottleneck: Why Memory Is Becoming the Real Infrastructure Battle
When discussing the cost of AI infrastructure, attention typically centers on GPUs and companies like Nvidia. But memory is quickly emerging as a critical — and expensive — piece of the equation. As hyperscalers invest billions into new data centers, DRAM prices have surged dramatically over the past year, reshaping the economics of AI deployment.
Beyond hardware costs, a new technical challenge is gaining importance: memory orchestration. Ensuring that the right data reaches the right model or agent at the right moment can significantly reduce token usage. That efficiency can determine whether AI services remain financially viable at scale.
Semiconductor analyst Doug O'Laughlin recently explored this trend on his Substack, featuring a conversation with Val Bercovici, chief AI officer at Weka. While their discussion focuses heavily on chip-level considerations, the broader implications for AI software architecture are substantial.
One practical example is how long AI models cache user prompts. With models like Anthropic’s Claude, users can pay for different cache durations — such as five minutes or up to an hour. Accessing cached data is far cheaper than reprocessing information, but cache space is limited. Adding new data to a query can push older information out, making careful management essential.
Though technically complex, the takeaway is straightforward: memory management is poised to become a defining factor in AI performance and profitability. Companies that optimize how memory is allocated, cached, and retrieved will gain a decisive edge in the next phase of AI competition.
