Srinivasa Reddy Kandi: Amazon to Pay $309M to Consumers in Settlement Over Return Refunds

Amazon to Pay $309M to Consumers in Settlement Over Return Refunds:

Amazon has agreed to pay $309.5 million into a consumer settlement fund as part of a broader agreement to resolve claims that it failed to properly refund customers for returned items. The overall settlement is valued at more than $1 billion, according to court filings.

The agreement includes more than $600 million in refunds that have already been issued or will soon be paid to affected customers. Amazon has refunded roughly $570 million so far, with an additional $34 million still outstanding. Reuters first reported the settlement.

In addition to the cash payments, Amazon will provide more than $363 million in non-monetary relief aimed at improving its return and refund systems. These changes are intended to reduce errors and improve verification and processing, court documents show. Amazon has denied any wrongdoing as part of the settlement.

The class-action lawsuit, filed in 2023, accused the e-commerce giant of causing significant financial harm by charging customers for items that were returned but not refunded.

In a statement to TechCrunch, Amazon said it identified a limited number of return transactions during an internal review in 2025 where refunds were either not completed or could not be verified. The company said it began issuing refunds that year and is now providing additional compensation to eligible customers under the settlement terms.
