Srinivasa Reddy Kandi: ChatGPT’s User Growth Shows Signs of Slowing, Report Finds

ChatGPT’s User Growth Shows Signs of Slowing, Report Finds:

According to new data from market intelligence firm Sensor Tower, ChatGPT’s rapid growth is beginning to level off. Despite this slowdown, the OpenAI-owned chatbot remains the dominant player in the AI assistant market—capturing 50% of global mobile downloads and 55% of global monthly active users (MAUs).

However, Google’s Gemini is gaining momentum, with faster growth in downloads, monthly active users, and time spent in the app, the report reveals.

This accelerating adoption rate could help Gemini gradually close the gap with ChatGPT. OpenAI seems aware of this threat; a recent internal “code red” memo from CEO Sam Altman urged employees to improve key areas such as personalization, reliability, and image generation.

Both Platforms Still Growing Strongly
Despite the competition, both AI platforms continue to show significant year-over-year expansion:
ChatGPT’s global MAUs grew 180% as of November 2025
Gemini’s MAUs rose 170% in the same period
Yet, Sensor Tower’s data shows that ChatGPT’s user growth may be slowing. Between August and November, its global monthly active users increased only around 6%, reaching approximately 810 million. These numbers suggest that ChatGPT may be approaching market saturation.

Gemini’s Rapid Surge:

During the same three-month period, Gemini’s global MAUs surged about 30%, boosted by the release of its advanced image generation model, Nano Banana, which attracted a wave of new users.
The report also notes a significant advantage for Google: twice as many U.S. Android users now use Gemini directly through the Android operating system compared to those using the standalone Gemini app. Since Android dominates globally, this deeper system-level integration could give Google a substantial competitive edge, allowing Gemini to reach users beyond the limits of a single app or browser interface.
