Elon Musk Pushes Forward with Ambitious Plan for Orbital AI Data Centers:

Elon Musk appears to be moving decisively toward an ambitious vision of building massive data centers in orbit. What initially seemed like a bold — perhaps even playful — move last Friday, when SpaceX submitted plans to the FCC for a million-satellite data center network, is now looking like a serious strategic initiative.
The plan gained further credibility this week with the formal merger of SpaceX and xAI, uniting Musk’s space and artificial intelligence ventures. The integration suggests a coordinated infrastructure strategy, potentially centered around space-based computing.

Momentum is also building on the regulatory front. The FCC has officially accepted SpaceX’s filing and opened it for public comment — typically a routine step. However, FCC Chairman Brendan Carr drew attention to the proposal by sharing it publicly on X, signaling notable interest at the highest levels. Given Carr’s track record and Musk’s political positioning, the proposal may face a relatively smooth path through the approval process.

Meanwhile, Musk has begun outlining the technical and economic rationale behind orbital data centers. Speaking on Patrick Collison’s “Cheeky Pint” podcast alongside Dwarkesh Patel, Musk argued that space offers significant advantages for AI infrastructure. Solar panels, he explained, generate substantially more energy in orbit — potentially up to five times more than on Earth — dramatically lowering one of the biggest operational costs of data centers: power.

According to Musk, scaling computing infrastructure may ultimately prove easier and more cost-effective in space than on the ground. With regulatory steps underway and corporate alignment in place, orbital AI clusters are shifting from speculative concept to concrete plan.
