Srinivasa Reddy Kandi: Feds Report More Complaints of Tesla’s FSD Running Red Lights and Crossing Lanes

Feds Report More Complaints of Tesla’s FSD Running Red Lights and Crossing Lanes

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has identified a growing number of incidents involving Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (Supervised) system allegedly violating traffic laws. According to a new letter sent to Tesla this week, the agency has now documented at least 80 instances where the software reportedly ran red lights or drifted into the wrong lane.

NHTSA says it has received 62 complaints from Tesla owners, 14 reports from Tesla itself, and four media reports describing potential violations. This marks a notable increase from the roughly 50 incidents cited when the investigation began in October.

Federal Probe Expands:

The agency’s Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) is examining whether Tesla’s driver-assistance system can correctly detect and respond to traffic signals, signs, and lane markings. Investigators are also assessing whether the system provides adequate warnings to drivers when issues arise. Tesla is required to respond to the inquiry by January 19, 2026.

The rise in complaints is particularly noteworthy because the initial cases included several reports tied to a single intersection in Joppa, Maryland—an issue Tesla claimed to have addressed. NHTSA did not specify the locations of the newly reported incidents, and Tesla continues to heavily redact its submissions to the agency.

Musk’s Statement Raises Eyebrows:

The letter coincides with recent comments by CEO Elon Musk, who claimed on X that an upcoming FSD version will allow drivers to text while using the system—despite texting and driving being illegal in nearly every U.S. state. NHTSA has not commented on Musk’s claim.

NHTSA Requests More Data from Tesla
As part of the discovery process, NHTSA’s letter outlines several data requests. The agency is seeking information on:
How many Tesla vehicles are equipped with Full Self-Driving
How frequently FSD is activated
Customer complaints related to these specific FSD issues
Complaints from fleet operators
Any associated lawsuits or arbitration cases

This marks NHTSA’s second investigation into Tesla’s FSD system. A separate probe, opened in October 2024, is examining how the software performs in low-visibility conditions, such as heavy fog or intense sunlight.
