Srinivasa Reddy Kandi: Google Credits AI for Decline in Malicious Apps on Play Store in 2025

Google Credits AI for Decline in Malicious Apps on Play Store in 2025:

Google says its growing investment in artificial intelligence and proactive security tools has led to a noticeable drop in malicious activity on Google Play.

In its latest Android app ecosystem safety report released Thursday, the company revealed it blocked 1.75 million apps from being published in 2025 for violating Play Store policies. That marks a decline compared to 2.36 million blocked apps in 2024 and 2.28 million in 2023.

The annual report outlines how Google monitors and reviews apps to safeguard users against threats such as malware, financial scams, data privacy abuses, deceptive subscription models, and other harmful practices. According to the company, enhanced AI-driven detection systems have played a key role in identifying problematic apps before they reach users.

Google also reported banning more than 80,000 developer accounts in 2025 for attempting to distribute policy-violating apps. That number represents a significant year-over-year decrease, down from 158,000 accounts in 2024 and 333,000 in 2023.

The company attributes the overall decline in bad actors targeting the Play Store to its stronger enforcement measures and advanced AI-powered defenses.
