Srinivasa Reddy Kandi: Instagram Expands TV App to Google TV to Boost Reels Viewing

Instagram Expands TV App to Google TV to Boost Reels Viewing:

Instagram is rolling out its Instagram for TV app to Google TV devices across the United States, roughly two months after its initial launch on Amazon Fire TV in December. Originally introduced to extend the reach of Reels beyond smartphones, the app now also allows users to explore posts from their main Instagram feeds directly on their television screens.

With this move, Instagram aims to strengthen its position in the living-room viewing space, where YouTube currently holds a dominant presence. The platform appears to be encouraging users to switch between short-form content on TV in a way that mirrors channel surfing. Competitor TikTok has already established its own TV app offering.

The Instagram for TV experience is tailored to individual users, surfacing Reels based on their viewing habits and favorite creators within the main app. Content is grouped into channels and thematic categories such as comedy, music, and lifestyle to simplify browsing.

Videos play automatically, eliminating the need for continuous scrolling. The TV app also supports core engagement features, including liking, commenting, and resharing Reels.

To streamline access, users can link the TV app with their existing Instagram account and add up to five profiles within a household. Alternatively, viewers have the option to create a dedicated account specifically for TV-based viewing.
