Srinivasa Reddy Kandi: Lucid Motors Cuts 12% of Workforce in Push Toward Profitability

Lucid Motors Cuts 12% of Workforce in Push Toward Profitability:

Lucid Motors is reducing its workforce by 12% as part of an effort to streamline operations and move closer to profitability. The decision was outlined in an internal memo, in which leadership said the move is intended to improve efficiency and better allocate resources.

The layoffs will not affect hourly employees in manufacturing, logistics, or quality roles. While the company has not disclosed the exact number of impacted staff, the cuts are expected to total in the hundreds. At the end of 2024, Lucid reported approximately 6,800 full-time employees worldwide.

In the memo, interim CEO Marc Winterhoff acknowledged the difficulty of the decision, expressing appreciation for departing employees and noting that severance packages, bonuses, continued healthcare coverage, and transition support would be provided.

The restructuring comes as Lucid ramps up production of its Gravity SUV. Although the company initially faced manufacturing and quality challenges with the model, output improved significantly, and overall production doubled in 2024 compared to the prior year.

Looking ahead, Lucid plans to introduce a more affordable midsize electric vehicle later this year, expected to start around $50,000. The automaker is also partnering with Uber and Nuro to launch a robotaxi service in the San Francisco area. Additionally, the company remains focused on expanding advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS), software development, and global sales of its Gravity SUV and Air sedan as it prepares to report its 2025 financial results next week.
