Srinivasa Reddy Kandi: Meta’s Massive AI Data Center Push Raises Questions Over Natural Gas Expansion

Meta’s Massive AI Data Center Push Raises Questions Over Natural Gas Expansion:

The growing scale of AI data centers is pushing energy demands to unprecedented levels — in some cases rivaling entire U.S. states. Meta’s upcoming Hyperion AI data center is a prime example, with projected electricity consumption comparable to that of South Dakota once fully operational.

To meet this demand, Meta recently announced plans to fund seven additional natural gas power plants, adding to three already in development. Altogether, these ten facilities, located in Louisiana, are expected to generate approximately 7.5 gigawatts of power — slightly exceeding the total electricity capacity of South Dakota.

This move stands in contrast to Meta’s long-standing emphasis on sustainability. The company has consistently highlighted its investments in renewable energy, including large-scale purchases of solar power, battery storage, and even long-term nuclear energy agreements.

The reliance on natural gas is often justified as a temporary solution — a “bridge fuel” — intended to support energy needs while renewable and nuclear technologies continue to expand. However, critics argue that this rationale has been used for decades and is becoming less convincing, especially as renewable energy and battery storage costs continue to decline.

Given Meta’s leadership in clean energy adoption, its decision to significantly expand natural gas usage for its Hyperion project has sparked debate over whether the company is straying from its environmental commitments.
