Srinivasa Reddy Kandi: Meta and Google Found Negligent in Landmark Social Media Addiction Lawsuit

Meta and Google Found Negligent in Landmark Social Media Addiction Lawsuit:

A Los Angeles jury on Wednesday ruled against Meta and Google in a landmark case claiming that social media platforms contributed to a young woman’s mental health struggles. The decision comes just a day after Meta faced a similar loss in a child safety lawsuit in New Mexico.

The plaintiff, Kaley M. (K.G.M.), now 20, argued that Instagram and YouTube played a major role in her anxiety, depression, and body dysmorphia during her teenage years. The jury awarded $3 million in compensatory damages, with Meta responsible for 70% of the payout. Further damages may be determined as deliberations continue.

During the trial in Los Angeles County Superior Court, evidence suggested that Meta had long been aware of the addictive nature of its platforms for teens and actively leveraged that knowledge to boost engagement. Lawyers for the tech giants attempted to shift blame onto Kaley’s home environment and her parents’ divorce, but jurors sided with the plaintiff.

Prior to this trial, both TikTok and Snap settled with the plaintiff, avoiding similar courtroom battles.

Legal experts say these rulings, including Tuesday’s verdict in New Mexico, may establish a precedent holding social media companies accountable for the psychological harms caused by their platforms. This could pave the way for a new wave of lawsuits targeting tech firms over algorithm-driven engagement and inadequate safety measures.

Both Meta and Google are expected to appeal the decision. A Meta spokesperson confirmed the company disputes the outcome and is reviewing its options.
