OpenAI has decided to put its proposed “adult” or erotic mode for ChatGPT on indefinite hold. The feature, first hinted at by CEO Sam Altman in October, had sparked significant backlash from both external watchdog groups and internal stakeholders.

Concerns escalated earlier this year during a tense meeting between company executives and advisers, where one participant reportedly warned that such a feature could lead to harmful applications, describing it as potentially creating a “sexy suicide coach.” Due to mounting criticism, the rollout of the feature had already been delayed several times before being officially paused with no clear timeline for return.

When asked for further details, OpenAI declined to comment beyond confirming the pause.

This move is part of a broader shift within the company as it trims down experimental projects to focus on core priorities. Earlier in the week, OpenAI also deprioritized its “Instant Checkout” feature, which aimed to turn ChatGPT into a shopping platform. Additionally, it announced the shutdown of its AI video tool, Sora, which had drawn criticism for contributing to a surge of low-quality AI-generated content online.

These decisions follow reports of a major strategic pivot, with OpenAI aiming to concentrate more on enterprise users and software developers rather than side projects.

The timing may also reflect increasing competition from Anthropic, which has been gaining traction with a strong lineup of business and coding tools. Meanwhile, OpenAI recently secured a $200 million contract with the U.S. Department of Defense, highlighting its growing focus on high-value, strategic partnerships.
