Srinivasa Reddy Kandi: Perplexity Launches “Computer,” a Cloud-Based Agent Powered by 19 AI Models

Perplexity Launches “Computer,” a Cloud-Based Agent Powered by 19 AI Models:

Perplexity AI has introduced a new agentic product called Perplexity Computer, expanding its vision of combining multiple AI systems into a single workflow engine. The company describes the tool as a “computer user agent” capable of handling complex, multi-step tasks independently by drawing on 19 different AI models — and even generating subagents to tackle specific subtasks.

The feature is now available exclusively to subscribers of the $200-per-month Perplexity Max tier. Unlike some other agent-style AI tools, Perplexity Computer runs entirely in the cloud, a design choice that may reduce certain security risks associated with locally executed automation systems.

Although no live demo was provided to media — after the company canceled a planned demonstration due to last-minute product flaws — example use cases on Perplexity’s website show the tool gathering financial, legal, and statistical data, performing analysis, and delivering results as fully built websites or visualizations.

The launch signals the next phase in Perplexity’s evolution. The startup initially gained traction by packaging advanced AI models into a streamlined, search-like answer interface. It later expanded into web browsing with its Comet browser. Company executives argue that competitors, including Google, have since adapted their products to resemble Perplexity’s approach — a development that reflects both validation and growing competition.

As the AI landscape shifts, Perplexity has also adjusted its business strategy. Despite being one of the earliest AI platforms to experiment with advertising, the company discontinued ads late last year, stating that ads risked undermining user trust in the neutrality of its responses.

However, Perplexity’s audience — numbering in the tens of millions — remains far smaller than that of OpenAI, which reports hundreds of millions of weekly users for ChatGPT and has begun testing advertising within its own platform this year.
