Srinivasa Reddy Kandi: Perplexity Unveils ‘Computer,’ a Cloud-Based AI Agent Powered by 19 Models

Perplexity Unveils ‘Computer,’ a Cloud-Based AI Agent Powered by 19 Models:

Perplexity AI has introduced a new agentic product called Perplexity Computer, positioning it as a unified system that brings together multiple artificial intelligence capabilities under one platform.
According to the company, the tool functions as a cloud-based “computer-using agent” capable of independently executing complex workflows. It leverages 19 different AI models and can even generate subagents to tackle specific subtasks. The feature is available exclusively to subscribers of the company’s top-tier $200-per-month Perplexity Max plan.

Because the system operates entirely in the cloud, Perplexity suggests it may avoid some of the security concerns faced by locally run agent tools such as OpenClaw.
Although no public hands-on demonstration has been conducted, example use cases shared by the company show the tool gathering financial, statistical, or legal data, performing analysis, and presenting results in the form of finished websites or data visualizations.

Perplexity had scheduled a live demo for media during a recent executive briefing but canceled it after discovering product flaws shortly before the event.

The launch marks another step in Perplexity’s evolution. The company initially gained attention during the AI surge by wrapping advanced language models in a search-engine-style interface. It later expanded into web browsing with the release of its Comet browser. Executives say competitors have since adopted similar approaches, though they acknowledge that growing competition presents both validation and risk.

Perplexity has also shifted its business strategy. After becoming one of the early AI companies to experiment with advertising, it discontinued ads late last year, citing concerns that they could undermine user trust in the accuracy of responses.

Despite having tens of millions of users, Perplexity remains far smaller than industry giants such as OpenAI, which reports 800 million weekly users and has begun testing advertising within ChatGPT this year.
With the debut of Perplexity Computer, the company is doubling down on the idea that users may benefit from systems capable of orchestrating multiple AI models rather than relying on a single one.
