Serve Robotics Expands Beyond Food Delivery with Hospital Robot Acquisition:

Serve Robotics, the sidewalk delivery robot company backed by Nvidia and Uber, is taking its first step into healthcare with the acquisition of Diligent Robotics. The Los Angeles–based company announced on Tuesday that it is acquiring Diligent, a startup known for its hospital assistant robot, Moxi, which helps medical staff by transporting lab samples, supplies, and other materials within hospitals. The deal values Diligent’s common stock at $29 million.

Founded in 2017 by Andrea Thomaz and Vivian Chu, Diligent Robotics has raised more than $75 million in venture funding, including a $25 million round in 2023. Its flagship robot, Moxi, is already deployed in hospitals to reduce the workload of nurses and clinical staff by handling routine logistical tasks.

The acquisition represents Serve Robotics’ first move outside its core business of sidewalk food delivery. Serve began as an internal project at Postmates in 2017, continued under Uber after its acquisition of Postmates, and later spun out as an independent company in 2021. In April 2024, Serve went public through a reverse merger.

Despite the shift into healthcare, serve co-founder and CEO Ali Kashani sees the move as a natural extension of the company’s original mission. While Serve has not previously focused on hospitals, Kashani believes Diligent’s technology aligns closely with Serve’s expertise in last-mile delivery and autonomous robots that safely navigate crowded, human-centered environments.

According to Kashani, once the challenge of enabling robots to move seamlessly among people is solved, the same technology can be applied across many industries. Healthcare, he noted, is simply one of the most compelling next environments where this capability can deliver immediate value.
