Srinivasa Reddy Kandi: Snap Settles Social Media Addiction Lawsuit Ahead of California Trial

Snap Settles Social Media Addiction Lawsuit Ahead of California Trial:

Snap has reached a settlement in a lawsuit that accused the company of contributing to social media addiction, just days before the case was set to go to trial, according to multiple reports.

The New York Times reported that the settlement was announced Tuesday in the California Superior Court in Los Angeles County. The case was filed by a 19-year-old plaintiff identified in court records as K.G.M., who alleged that Snap designed its platform’s algorithms and features in ways that fostered addiction and harmed users’ mental health.

The terms of the settlement were not made public:

The lawsuit is part of a broader wave of legal action targeting major social media companies. In addition to Snap, the case also names Meta, YouTube, and TikTok, though none of those companies have reached settlements. Snap also continues to face several other lawsuits involving similar allegations.

Court documents revealed in related cases suggest that Snap employees had raised internal concerns about the potential mental health impact on teenagers as far back as nine years ago. Snap has responded by stating that these examples were selectively chosen and taken out of context.

Plaintiffs have compared these cases to the lawsuits against Big Tobacco in the 1990s, arguing that social media companies downplayed or concealed known risks. They claim that features such as infinite scrolling, autoplay videos, and algorithm-driven recommendations encourage excessive use, contributing to issues like depression, eating disorders, and self-harm, according to the New York Times.
