Srinivasa Reddy Kandi: Sophia Space Secures $10M to Test Innovative Cooling System for Space-Based Computers

Sophia Space Secures $10M to Test Innovative Cooling System for Space-Based Computers:

Sophia Space has raised $10 million in seed funding to demonstrate a new method for cooling high-performance computers in space. The round includes backing from Alpha Funds, KDDI Green Partners Fund, and Unlock Venture Partners.

As more companies explore launching advanced processors into orbit, managing heat has become a major technical challenge. While space is extremely cold, the absence of air means heat cannot dissipate through convection. Instead, it must be transferred through conduction and radiation — a limitation highlighted by Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang during a recent earnings call.

Sophia Space aims to address this issue with a novel passive cooling approach. The company plans to validate its system on Earth before integrating it into a satellite bus purchased from Apex Space. An in-orbit demonstration is targeted for late 2027 or early 2028.

Unlike companies such as SpaceX and Google, which are exploring traditional satellite designs with large radiators for future space data centers, Sophia Space is pursuing a different concept.

The foundation of its technology comes from a $100 million Caltech initiative focused on developing orbital solar power plants capable of transmitting energy back to Earth. Researchers in that program designed a thin, flexible, sail-like structure rather than the conventional box-shaped satellite model. Although generating and transmitting solar power from space remains technically and regulatorily complex, Sophia Space’s leadership saw potential in adapting the lightweight structure to support and cool space-based computing systems.
