Toyota Canada Deploys Seven Humanoid Robots at RAV4 Plant Under Service Deal:

Toyota’s Canadian manufacturing arm has signed a deal to deploy seven humanoid robots at one of its factories following a year-long pilot program. The robots will operate at a plant producing RAV4 SUVs under a robots-as-a-service agreement.

The machines, known as Digit, are developed by Agility Robotics, a company spun out of Oregon State University in 2015. According to Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada (TMMC) President Tim Hollander, the company selected Digit after evaluating several robotic systems, aiming to enhance employee experience while boosting operational efficiency.

Digit is designed for industrial settings and typically works independently of human workers, often serving as a link between automated production lines. At the Canadian facility, the robots will handle the task of unloading totes filled with automotive parts from an automated warehouse tugger.

While viral demonstrations often showcase humanoid robots performing flashy feats, integrating them into real-world manufacturing environments remains challenging. Moving from controlled lab tests to active factory floors requires careful coordination, including workflow integration, charging logistics, and maintenance planning.

Industry experts note that broader adoption will depend on how effectively technology companies adapt their systems to real operational needs. As Ram Devarajulu, vice president at Cambridge Consultants, recently observed at the Humanoids Summit in late 2025, meaningful collaboration between robotics firms and industrial operators is key to accelerating deployment.
