US TikTok Deal Explained: What Changed and Why It Matters:

TikTok’s future in the United States has been uncertain for years, as U.S. officials repeatedly raised concerns that user data could be accessed by the Chinese government through the app’s parent company, ByteDance.

That uncertainty took a major turn on January 22, 2026, when TikTok announced the official formation of TikTok USDS Joint Venture LLC. The new entity was created to comply with an executive order signed by President Donald Trump approving the sale of TikTok’s U.S. operations to a group of American investors.

Under the agreement, ByteDance’s ownership stake in the U.S. business has been reduced to less than 20%, with the remaining majority now held by non-Chinese investors. The move is designed to address long-standing national security concerns while allowing TikTok to continue operating in the U.S.

American users — particularly creators who rely on TikTok for income — have been caught in the middle of the political standoff for years. In 2024, the app briefly went offline in the U.S., sparking widespread anxiety before service was quickly restored. TikTok officially returned to both the Apple App Store and Google Play Store on February 2, 2025.

Multiple investor groups had competed to acquire TikTok’s U.S. operations. After President Trump extended the TikTok ban deadline four times, negotiations finally concluded in December 2025, when TikTok signed a deal to divest part of its U.S. business to American investors.

Earlier in 2025, President Trump also stated that Chinese President Xi Jinping had approved the proposed framework for the deal, clearing the way for U.S. investor control. ByteDance has since reiterated its commitment to keeping TikTok available to American users under the new ownership structure.
